Andre Rebelo, an Australian crypto investor and former partner of Instagram influencer Grace Piscopo, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on April 1 in Perth after being found guilty of murdering his mother in 2020.

Andre Rebelo Sentenced for Killing Mother in High-Profile Case

Rebelo was convicted of murdering his mother, Colleen, after an eight-week trial where his siblings and ex-girlfriend testified.

Colleen Rebelo was found dead in the shower of her suburban home in Perth on May 25, 2020, by her son.

Authorities did not determine an exact cause of death, though some reports suggested possible asphyxiation.

“You killed your own mother, in a particularly egregious and shocking nature,” Justice Bruno Fiannaca said.

“This is a crime that right minded people would regard with horror, murdering your mother was the ultimate betrayal of her trust and everything she gave,” he added.

Debt and Financial Motives Behind Andre Rebelo’s Crime

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Colleen’s therapist, Narina Sidhu, alerted police shortly following her client’s death that Rebelo had repeatedly contacted her about signing a life insurance claim in his mother’s name.

Authorities found that Rebelo had created the policies himself and forged documents to claim up to AUD $1 million (around USD $627,000).

Prosecutors said Rebelo and Piscopo had accumulated nearly AUD $100,000 (about USD $62,000) in debt due to their spending habits, which may have influenced Rebelo’s actions.

The investigation did not uncover clear details about Rebelo’s cryptocurrency investments, but prosecutors focused instead on his financial struggles and motive.

Social Media Activity and Final Sentencing

Piscopo, who shares a child with Rebelo and has since separated from him, did not attend the sentencing.

Two days before the sentencing, Piscopo shared a beach photo from Bali on Instagram, captioned “paradise.”

Rebelo will be eligible for parole in 2047, after serving at least 25 years.
