Elon Musk, SpaceX and Tesla superstar and tech hero, has finally revealed his personal cryptocurrency holdings.
To the disappointment of many people who are both fans of him and of crypto, in a response to spam Twitter accounts claiming to be Mr. Musk and requesting Ethereum, he disclosed that he never bought any cryptocurrency, and only holds a small amount of Bitcoin gifted to him by a friend.
To the question: “Right. I should’ve clarified, I realized that’s not Elon. Meant to ask in general why is all the spam popping up lately?” he tweeted: “Not sure. I let @jack know, but it’s still going. I literally own zero cryptocurrency, apart from .25 BTC that a friend sent me many years ago.”
Twitter is seeing a worrying amount of scam accounts pretending to be public personas who are requesting ETH to be sent to them, often as a ways to “give away” free ETH to the address that they get it from – something like requesting 0.4 ETH in order to send 4 ETH back. The accounts usually copy the public profiles entirely with small, almost unnoticeable differences in usernames. For example, instead of a capital i, the scammer will use a lower case L, or a zero instead of an O.
However, even though Musk does not own crypto himself, he has said it was “a good thing” before. Back in 2016, when he was appointed to Trump’s team of advisers, he said in an interview: “I think Bitcoin is probably a good thing. I think it’s primarily going to be a means of doing illegal transactions…But that’s not necessarily entirely bad. You know, some things maybe shouldn’t be illegal.”
It was suspected for a while that Musk may be Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin, but Musk was quick to dispel any arguments of the sort, taking to Twitter again to claim no involvement with cryptocurrencies.
