CryptoKitties Creators Enter NBA
Dapper Labs, a blockchain company and creator of CryptoKitties, together with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) is developing a new digital platform for basketball fans, NBA Top Shot.
According to the company, the platform will allow basketball fans to purchase, trade and own digital NBA collectibles on blockchain. The NBA Top Shot collectibles experience is set to launch in the fall, with the game to follow in early 2020.
The platform will also feature a complementary head-to-head game.
"Like other sports games or fantasy brackets, fans who play the game are tasked with creating their ideal squad, but in this game, their rosters are built by acquiring live in-game moments from the NBA season," the company explained. "These moments, such as a Kevin Durant 3-pointshot, or Joel Embiid dunk, which are acquired as digital collectibles or tokens, can then be either owned forever or used to compete against other players in online tournaments and leagues on-chain."
According to Dapper Labs, they are "eager to show the NBA’s worldwide audience the value of blockchain technology through NBA Top Shot."
"We use the latest in blockchain technology to create assets and experiences that are guaranteed limited edition and authentic, not to mention portable and permanent in a way nothing digital has ever been before,” Roham Gharegozlou, CEO of Dapper Labs, was quoted as saying in a press release.
NBA is one of the world’s most global sports leagues:
- One of the largest social media communities in the world, with 1.6 billion likes and followers globally across all league, team, and player platforms.
- Games and programming in 50 languages across 215 countries and territories.
