John Oliver tackled blockchain, crypto and related topics in his Last Week Tonight show, despite the fact that “discussions of new technology tend to age badly,” reminding us all of Google Glass and adding, “Technology, the thing that will make television so high def that I will no longer be allowed to appear on it.”

The English comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor and television host used the chance on his show Last Week Tonight on HBO to talk crypto, blockchain, initial coin offerings, scams and frauds, all with a heavy dose of satire, as he usually does. He described Bitcoin and cryptocurrency as a combination of “everything you don’t understand about money with everything you don’t understand about technology.”

In each of the past two years, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has won a Primetime Emmy Award in prestigious categories such as ‘Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series’ and ‘Outstanding Variety Talk Series’, among others.

Along with a very simplified explanation of all things crypto, just enough to have outsiders understand a bit more and crypto enthusiasts chuckle, he also had colleague comedian Keegan-Michael Key join in at the end of the 25-minute-long segment for a special surprise that’s bound to make anyone who has been following the events of the past few months laugh heartily.

The Reddit cryptocurrency community mostly agrees: the segment is well thought out, without being either bullish or bearish, saying, “That’s what we need more of.”
