Elon Musk’s DOGE Meme Fuels Speculation of Political Ambitions Under Trump Presidency
Elon Musk has once again stirred the pot with a provocative social media post, hinting at a potential political role if Donald Trump reclaims the presidency in the November 2024 election.
In a recent post on X, the billionaire shared a meme that features an AI-generated image of Musk sitting behind a desk with a placard labeled “D.O.G.E.”—an acronym for “Department of Government Efficiency.”
The post, accompanied by the phrase “Department of Government Efficiency,” plays on both cryptocurrency and political themes, fueling speculation about Musk’s future in public service.
Doge Surges After Musk’s Tweet
Following the meme’s release, Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency closely associated with Musk, saw a notable surge, reaching a 24-hour high.
However, it has not yet reclaimed its peak from earlier in the week.
The speculation is further heightened by Trump’s recent proposal to establish a government efficiency commission.
Trump has pledged to launch this commission to conduct a comprehensive audit of the federal government’s finances and performance, recommending substantial reforms.
In response, Musk retweeted a video of Trump’s announcement with the comment, “This is badly needed.”
He implied a willingness to contribute to such an initiative, but stopped short of confirming any official government role.
Trump, for his part, suggested that Musk might head the proposed task force, framing it with a hint of humor about Musk’s schedule.
“Elon, because he is not very busy, has agreed to head that task force,” Trump said, indicating Musk’s potential involvement if he has the time.
Despite Trump’s remarks, it remains uncertain whether Musk is genuinely contemplating a government position.
Musk’s current commitments include leading Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, while also overseeing Neuralink, The Boring Company, and the X social media platform.
His recent activities, such as his contentious stance on X.com in Brazil, a challenge to fight Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, and ongoing legal disputes with OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, suggest a demanding schedule.
As the November election approaches, it remains to be seen whether any concrete plans for collaboration between Trump and Musk will materialize.
Court Dismisses Doge Manipulation Claims Against Musk
Last week, Musk and his electric vehicle company Tesla won the dismissal of a federal lawsuit accusing them of defrauding investors by hyping the cryptocurrency dogecoin and conducting insider trading, causing billions of dollars of losses.
The lawsuit, filed in 2022, alleged that Musk’s comments on X manipulated Dogecoin’s price and harmed cryptocurrency investors.
The investors claimed that Musk’s statements, including that Dogecoin might be his favorite currency, the people’s crypto, and the future currency of Earth, were misleading.
A number of plaintiffs who joined the class action lawsuit sought $86 billion in damages, in addition to triple damages of $172 billion.
“These statements are aspirational and puffery, not factual and susceptible to being falsified,” US District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein of the Southern District of New York wrote in his ruling.
