# Nano
Nano cryptocurrency (NANO) was designed as an alternative to both fiat and cryptos in terms of its availability for daily payments. This is to be achieved by delivering an architecture capable of supporting instantaneous and secure transactions without prohibitive fees. The Nano project started its development in 2014 thanks to the efforts of Colin LeMahieu, Russel Waters, Mica Busch, and Roy Keene. It was officially launched in 2015 as RaiBlocks project, earning its current name in 2018. Based on its focus on ensuring high scalability and transactional performance paired with efficient power utilization, Nano was able to attract attention of crypto world’s merchant communities. In 2018, the cryptocurrency payment gateway CoinGate announced that they have integrated Nano with their platform, allowing the Nano users to spend their coins at than 4,000 merchant outlets.
