Hurricane Dorian crashed into The Bahamas on Saturday, August 31, 2019, beginning a days-long onslaught on the northwestern Bahamian islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. The Category 5 storm, with winds from 185 mph to 220 mph, was the largest and most powerful storm to hit the archipelago in recorded history, and the damage left in its wake is equally unprecedented. Flattened homes have left tens of thousands displaced, and, tragically, the death toll at this writing stands at five.

This catastrophic situation requires urgent assistance from far and wide.

Deltec Bank & Trust, the Rotary Club of the Bahamas, Delchain Limited, and a growing list of local organizations are coming together to support rapid access to support. Due to the support of these organizations the funding channels are open and available to receive donations in multiple fiat currencies and digital assets.

Individuals that are locally based may also deliver case packages and physical support to the Deltec House in Lyford Cay, these care packages will be shipped on a recurring schedule starting Thursday to Hope Town, Abaco, where the Hope Town Fire & Rescue team are on the ground working to allocated aid.

Charities that are reputable and have an existing track record we are currently giving access to are:

  • The Bahamas Hurricane Restoration Fund is one agency helping to organize humanitarian aid and relief for the survivors of the storm. Organized in 2015 to help rebuild shelters in the southern Bahama islands in the wake of Hurricane Joaquin, the fund is recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Services as a Section 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt charitable organization, and run by volunteers, including from the Deltec International Group, a Bahamian financial services group, which is offering fee-free banking support for this emergency. Relief supplies donated and purchased in the aftermath of the storm qualify for tax and fee exemptions in The Bahamas. Monetary donations are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.
  • The Rotary Disaster Relief Fund, supported by a network of Rotarians with experience gathered during the storms of 2017. The Rotary Leadership will provide a transparent accounting for use of proceeds ensuring that 100% of proceeds are going directly to the needs of the impacted areas. These proceeds are going to broad on the ground support initiatives.

Individuals around the world who are motivated to make a life-changing donation in either fiat or digital currencies may find information on how to donate at the following link: https://delchain.io/donation

Local charities will be vetted and added over the next few days. Please check back in if you wish to support additional charities.

*Delchain is a Bahamian licensed Digital Asset Custodian & Trading platform.
