The massive rise in the price of Bitcoin last year has inspired a ten-fold increase in people from the UK to look for new careers in the blockchain industry, according to figures released by the job portal Indeed.

The top ten related roles on the site right now, by descending order, are: Developer, Recruiter, Software Engineer, Director IT Digital Strategy & Innovation, Java Developer, C# Developer, Senior QA Engineer, Solution & Proposition Architect, Senior Developer, and Project Manager.

Bill Richards, UK managing director of Indeed, told Express.co.uk: “Bitcoin was designed to be a secure and anonymous way of paying for things and for some its rocketing value is a sideshow. Nevertheless its stellar rise has turned blockchain – the technology that powers it – into a tech pin-up for ambitious jobseekers”.

According to Richards, hundreds of companies are now investing in staff and skills in an effort to develop new applications for blockchain.

“While the number of opportunities and searches remains modest, Indeed’s data shows companies are increasingly seeking experts to focus on this new technology – and jobseekers have been quick to react,” he added.

The beginning of 2017 saw vacancies outnumbering candidates four to one in an “acute talent mismatch”, according to the company. By the end of December, the number of the candidates increased ten-fold, and the number of available jobs tripled, effectively narrowing the talent gap.

The greatest spike came in December, when Bitcoin’s value reached its all-time high, breaching USD 19,000. That is when the number of job seekers looking for Bitcoin careers was more than double that seen in November 2017, the company explains.

Moreover, in the face of overwhelming demand, cryptocurrency exchanges are struggling to keep up without restricting service. So much, in fact, that many are forced to hire staff by the hundreds, as previously reported by Cryptonews.com.
