Hailed the new and revolutionary breed of apps, dapps (decentralized apps) run on a P2P (peer-to-peer) network of computers rather than a single computer. They are a type of software program designed to exist on the Internet in a way that is not controlled by any single entity. Dapps are a great reimagining of the blockchain technology as a basis for applications other than cryptocurrencies – if nothing else, at least it proves that it is possible to play blockchain-based games.

In this article, we bring you the top 5 dapps built on the Ethereum network, sorted by Daily Active Users (DAU) in the last 24 hours, according to dappradar.com data. Next to that, you can see the number of transactions that have taken place within the dapp in the past 24 hours as of the time of writing (June 11, GMT 10:00 AM). To play any of these games, you’re going to need the MetaMask extension in your browser, as well as Ethereum. The collectibles in these games are not free!

CryptoKitties: DAU 481, 24h Transactions: 3,876

It’s hard to believe that somebody in the cryptoverse may not have heard of CryptoKitties, the single most popular blockchain-based game – also one of the first ever – that allows users to purchase, collect, breed and sell various types of virtual cats. Every kitten is unique, and only the person that owns it can sell it – the beauty of decentralization is that there is no authority to take your kitty away from you. To know more about the game, read our interview with Bryce Bladon, co-founder of Axiom Zen, the developer of the game.

_______

As games outside the Top 5 tend to change their positions in the rankings more often, here are a few examples of other dapps that were in top 10 last week, but some of them dropped this week.

Ether Shrimp Farm
Not much different from the rest of the games, as this one is also based on collecting something, Ether Shrimp Farm is the number 1 shrimp farming simulator and idle game on the blockchain. The more shrimp you have, the more eggs they lay (each shrimp lays at a rate of 1 per day). Hatching more shrimp boosts your production, or you can cash them out for Ethereum!

Moon, Inc.
Similar to Goo, you have workers to produce cookies for you. Each type of worker is its own proof token contract and will have different dividend and production values. Different workers have different cookies production rates. The dividends are added to a Cookie Fund. You can sell your cookies and claim a proportion of the Cookie Fund.

PepeDapp
A perfect place to find memes. PepeDapp is a meme marketplace and wallet for collectors and artists. Each card is completely original and backed by the Ethereum blockchain, so your ownership is verified. The cards are different memes all reworked to look like Pepe the Frog, one of the most famous memes.

CryptoAssetFight
CryptoAssetFight is a new dapp on the Ethereum network that combines all these different crypto assets, such as Pepe memes and CryptoKitties, to participate in the game of virtual assets using blockchains, and bet on who will win. In addition to this, players with promotional abilities can also buy casinos for in-game returns.

CryptoCities.net
CryptoCities.net is, as the name may imply, a game in which real towns, villages and cities are discovered over time and traded for profit. Players can fight battles, conquer territory, earn gold, and build their empire.

EtherStocks
EtherStocks is a fantasy stock game, where you can buy and trade different stocks. The game’s official website immediately warns you, “Don’t play with more than you are willing to lose.” The game says it has unlimited growth potential: “Almost all investments are exponential, pyramid schemes, the Dow Jones, cryptocurrencies, meaning when something goes to the moon it is obviously great for the people who were in early, but then for the same exponential growth to be possible would put it outside this universe.”
